Mythical thought is a pervasive language, one of the great narratives common to all peoples of the earth, shaping and forming us from the very beginning. In this introductory essay, David Hernández de la Fuente explores the gallery of figures, motifs, and mythical stories related to Spain in the collective imagination: from Hercules to the myth of the two Spains, including the resistance of Numantia, Seneca, Don Pelayo, Don Juan, the Inquisition, and Carmen, in a chronological arc that begins before Romanization and ends in the contemporary era. He also addresses objects and symbolic elements of nature, such as animals and the very geography of the myths, which have held particular significance for the various civilizations that have inhabited the Iberian Peninsula.
