Aestheticization has become a key category for understanding contemporary experience. From mass culture and the commodification of life to the transformations of politics and subjectivity, the diagnosis of a progressive aestheticization of the world occupies a central place in 20th- and 21st-century philosophy and social theory.
This volume critically reconstructs the history of that debate and examines some of its most influential formulations. In dialogue with critical theory, phenomenology, contemporary French philosophy, and recent German aesthetics, the essays collected here interrogate the relationship between art and life, aesthetic experience and democracy, representation and trauma, as well as the role of aestheticization in an era marked by crisis and acceleration.
