Inspector Morse rarely gets caught up in the fervor that accompanies New Year's celebrations. So when a man's body is found in a room at the Haworth Hotel during the New Year's Eve party, still wearing the Rastafarian outfit that won him first prize in the costume contest, Morse can't help but think the case has an undeniable appeal. To further complicate matters, the victim's companion and the other guests have vanished without a trace, and almost none of them had checked into the hotel under their real names.
