August 1944. Thirty-seven Allied intelligence officers, condemned to death, enter Block 17 of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Among them are Commandant Forest Yeo-Thomas, Churchill's special envoy serving as liaison to the Resistance leaders; Captain Harry Peulevé, head of the SOE (a network created to sabotage and spy on the Nazis); and Lieutenant Stéphane Hessel, an agent of the Free French secret service (and later the celebrated author of Indignez-vous!). Three weeks after their arrival, the block commander receives an initial list of men to be executed. Soon, these three officers will be next on the list. With the complicity of the camp's underground resistance, the three devise a risky plan: to infiltrate the deadly barracks where a typhus vaccine is being tested. A race against time that will leave readers breathless as they experience the days of courage, anguish, and hope of a handful of men caught in the power struggles of Buchenwald.
