New York District Attorney R. Montgomery Tracy is going through a rough patch. Cecily Thane, the wife of a millionaire jewel dealer, has been shot dead in her home. Incredibly valuable pieces are missing from her safe, so for the police, there's no doubt: it was a robbery gone wrong, and the culprit can be none other than Tommy Spencer, who was often seen with the victim.
