Before embarking on yet another pleasure trip—this time to Africa—Laura Maldonada, a beautiful and imperious woman approaching fifty, and her husband, Desmond, wait in a New York hotel room, whiskies in hand, for the arrival of three guests they haven't seen in a long time: Clara Hansen, the shy, fragile daughter from Laura’s first, tumultuous marriage; Carlos Maldonada, Laura’s eccentric, restless brother; and Peter Rice, a publisher and family friend. Yet what begins as a cheerful send-off for the couple soon devolves into a bitter, harrowing family dispute. Over the course of the evening—which starts in the hotel room and continues at the upscale restaurant where they dine—they all discover, with a mix of fascination and horror, the bond of hatred that keeps them morbidly tethered to one another. The gathering reaches its climax when Laura reveals the dramatic secret she has been concealing all night, forcing them into a cruel and definitive confrontation.
