IV Premio de Dramaturgia Antonio Gala
It is the early 1980s. Paqui and Manuel are a young, newlywed couple starting their life together in a charming apartment in the neighborhood where they grew up. Manuel has just been appointed a tenured history professor at the university and aspires to earn his doctorate. Paqui is finally beginning her higher education while harboring a secret dream: to publish the manuscript she has been working on for years. However, the arrival of a child is about to put their plans—and their certainties—to the test. Over the course of more than forty years—in a constant interplay of mirrors and echoes between past and present—Paqui and Manuel must confront the consequences of the passing of time while helplessly witnessing the transformation of a neighborhood they no longer recognize as their own. Sacrifices, grief, old age, and illness eventually take their toll, forcing them to make the most painful decision of their lives. And facing that decision is a question that will stay with them for decades: are we what we build?
