En el centenario de la Generación del 27, Alianza recupera las voces esenciales y amplía la mirada sobre un movimiento decisivo.
Luisa Carnés (Madrid, 1905 – Mexico City, 1964) was born into a humble family in Madrid’s *Barrio de las Letras*. She left school at the age of eleven to work in a millinery workshop and later held jobs as a tearoom waitress, a telephone operator, and a typist at a publishing house. Tenacious and self-taught, she transformed those experiences into the living substance of a literary body of work defined by its focus on women, the working world, and those who rarely took center stage in history. Following the Republican defeat, she went into exile in Mexico. Among the few possessions she took with her was a leather satchel that held—like a treasure—her short stories. The thirteen stories collected in this volume offer a journey spanning more than three decades of writing, revealing a storyteller of extraordinary power and sensitivity. Across these pages pass day laborers defying injustice, female prisoners of the postwar era, couples confronting prejudice, as well as mothers, working women, and others forced to endure in the face of adversity. These stories offer a lucid portrayal of the tensions of her time, yet they retain their full capacity to move and engage the contemporary reader. Through prose that is precise, humane, and deeply grounded in reality, Luisa Carnés forged one of the most distinctive voices in twentieth-century Spanish literature. These stories stand as a testament to a talent that neither exile nor oblivion could erase.
