Anton Chekhov famously gave advice to an aspiring writer: “If in the first act you hang a pistol on the wall, in the last act someone must fire it. If not, don’t hang it.” And yet, in Chekhov’s work, we find pistols that remain unfired, and even pistols that, if they trigger anything at all, unleash not a duel, but a love story. So, are there really rules for fiction? Are there formulas for writing, or is writing about going against formulas? Writing rules often involve harmful reductionism when taken as gospel; they can standardize plots, stifle styles, and stifle intuition.
