She is born with a "physical peculiarity". Her father, a wealthy retired military officer, is filled with "monstrous horror". Her mother always addresses her formally. She is raised as a boy, perhaps destined to be a Benedictine monk, as her tutors suggest. But at nineteen, a doctor advises her to live as a woman and to change her gender on the birth certificate. "Learning to be a girl was, from then on, as important to me as preparing for my baccalaureate", she says. Ten years later, she lives in Paris. As Marion, she frequents lesbian salons, where everyone is surprised that she boasts of loving nothing and no one. As Mario, she writes articles and plays that are signed by others, and homosexuals adore her. "Will I always have to be alone, simply because I am two?" she wonders, while helping her worldly friends sort out their romantic entanglements. What will her destiny be? Does she have a choice? Or rather: must she choose?
