Back in France, the siege of Calais gives Thomas of Hookton the chance to distinguish himself in combat and command a group of men. Leading them across French territory, he happens to encounter a young woman on the verge of being burned at the stake for heresy; using the authority vested in him, he saves her at the last moment. Running parallel to this storyline is the ongoing quest for the Grail, which takes an unexpected turn in the final pages—posing a significant challenge for the series' continuation and generating great anticipation for the next installment. Cornwell’s exhaustive, detailed knowledge of medieval battles, weaponry, tactics, and the like is impressive, but even more remarkable is his extraordinary talent for weaving these elements into a plot where action and intrigue are inextricably linked.
