As head of the dreaded Stasi and a central figure in the German Democratic Republic’s apparatus of control—spanning the regime's inception to the fall of the Wall—Erich Mielke held many key positions, including deputy, member of the Central Committee and Politburo, and Minister for State Security. Drawing inspiration from Lenin, Stalin, and Dzerzhinsky, he displayed an authoritarian, egocentric, and cunning nature, driven by a thirst for power fueled by violence and intrigue. He lived through pivotal moments such as the construction of the Wall, the tenures of Ulbricht and Honecker, economic crises, and the uprisings in Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Arrested in 1989 and convicted of past crimes, he died a free man in 2000.
