Iran, in the midst of World War II. Two Polish sisters, Helena and Luzyna, have lost everything. Without parents or a home to go to, they are shipped to an Iranian refugee camp, where they survive as best they can. But when she learns that some orphans are being resettled in New Zealand, Helena hopes to be one of the children selected, until the officials inform her that there is only room for her younger sister, Luzyna. On the morning Luzyna is to board, Helena pretends to be her. But the horrors of war —and the guilt of having abandoned her sister— haunt Helena on her journey toward a new life, intensifying when a man connected to her past re-enters her life. Once in New Zealand, where she feels welcomed, the traumas Helena has suffered shatter her peace and fuel her passion for James McKenzie, the charming young pilot in the Allied forces.
