\"Érase una vez -de todos los dÃas buenos del año, el de Nochebuena- en que el viejo Scrooge estaba muy ocupado en su contadurÃa\".
Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol, the first and most famous of his Christmas Stories, in just six weeks in the autumn of 1843, still reeling from reading a parliamentary report on the appalling conditions of child laborers in mines—a subject close to his heart: at the age of twelve, he himself had to work in a factory labeling blacking while his father was imprisoned for debt. Perhaps this explains why he poured a mixture of indignation and tenderness into this story. He covered some of the publishing costs because his publisher doubted the success of a book on such a topic, but the work sold out within days and has been in print ever since.
Dickens read the story aloud more than a hundred times and conceived his Christmas tales as an invitation to compassion in Victorian England, convinced that even in the harshest winters, hope and humanity can be reborn.
With this special edition, with tinted edges, we celebrate the spirit of Christmas and the enduring relevance of a book that continues to remind us that kindness, when it arrives, always does so on time.
