Diana Athill was one of the great British editors of the second half of the 20th century. For more than five decades, she edited authors of the caliber of V. S. Naipaul and Jean Rhys, with whom she was a friend and confidante. As a writer, Athill cultivated a reputation for candor and wisdom, qualities also reflected in her memoirs. Now in her nineties, free from any inhibitions, Athill reflects frankly on old age: the disadvantages and, at times, the advantages that age brings, and on the wisdom and strength needed to face death.
