Fortunata y Jacinta

Fortunata y Jacinta is not only the great reference novel of the 19th century, but also a fundamental work of the Spanish cultural legacy in which Galdós tells the story of two women. Jacinta is married to Juanito Santa Cruz, who assures her the continuity of a wealthy social position. However, far from settling for the security of a bourgeois home, she lives tormented by her husband's infidelities and feels unable, due to her own condition as a woman, to find a way out of the golden prison in which she lives. Among her husband's most hated lovers is Fortunata, a working-class woman who, despite her situation, seems to enjoy what she craves most. However, Fortunata also feels trapped, since her social condition prevents her from legitimizing a love that she believes is more genuine than that imposed by marriage.
