In 1973, Francisco Franco sits on a bench in the gardens of El Pardo and begins to reminisce about his life: the Civil War, the consolidation of power, the internal tensions of the regime, the influence of his wife, his relationship with the Church, his dealings with Hitler and Mussolini, the repression, the autarky, the international opening, and finally, the moral assessment of his career. *By the Grace of God* is an immersion into Franco's most intimate memories, framed by two assassinations: that of Calvo Sotelo in 1936 and that of Carrero Blanco in 1973. This novel is, in reality, a portrait. A complex self-portrait of a historical figure who presents himself as an instrument of destiny and, at the same time, as a man aware of his flaws.
