On the night of August 17-18, 1972, Josep Pla suffered a heart attack while alone at his farmhouse in Llofriu. He was seventy-five years old. Pain, sweat, fear, and the awareness of death accompanied him for endless hours until, the following day, he was able to call a doctor. Years later, Pla transformed that extreme experience into a masterful narrative: precise, understated, ironic, and profoundly human. Without melodrama or sentimentality, he wrote one of the most intimate and surprising pieces in his entire oeuvre.
