This edition of *Poet in New York*, meticulously prepared by the British Hispanist Andrew A. Anderson, faithfully follows Federico García Lorca's last wishes, as expressed in the original manuscript the poet entrusted to José Bergamín at the offices of the publishing house 'Cruz y Raya' a few weeks before his death in Granada. This original manuscript, part handwritten and part typed, was of uncertain existence and whereabouts until recently. This is the first modern edition based directly on this elusive material, and therefore can undoubtedly be considered the definitive version of a collection of poems that ranks among the pinnacles of twentieth-century poetry and has exerted a powerful influence not only on the Spanish-speaking tradition but also on contemporary Western culture. Nothing could be more remarkable in this new collection, *Poet in New York*, than the seemingly inexhaustible fertility of Lorca's imagination.
