Nick Drake recorded only three albums between 1969 and 1972, records brimming with folk music of uncommon sensitivity and delicacy, both in composition and lyrics as well as in performance. These three recordings, now considered cult classics, had very little impact upon their release, and this remained the case until the 1980s, when Nick Drake was rediscovered and cited as a fundamental influence by artists such as R.E.M. and The Cure. An archetype of the misunderstood artist in his lifetime, today he is praised, even venerated, by both critics and fellow musicians. Nick Drake thus had a career and a life like a shooting star, incandescent but all too brief. Undermined by his failure, the singer died at the age of 26 from an overdose of antidepressants, amidst almost universal indifference.
