The creature advances. Behind us, the roots begin to close in. We have no room to run, no room to fight. But I lunge forward without thinking, grab a fallen branch, and smash it against the nearest trunk. The creature turns its head and charges at me. I roll across the moss, feeling mud splatter on my face. I leap to my feet and face the animal again. Is this the end for me?
