Adrianople has changed the course of the entire known world. After the terrible battle on the hill, the future is uncertain. The various Gothic tribes have once again scattered. Most, including Gundebald and Frigiternus, have marched south in different groups to plunder and devastate every Roman city they encounter. The Huns, led by Uldin, are ravaging the former lands of the Alans and Sarmatians; with him is Hilduara, now his wife and the sorceress of her people, and together they are sowing terror. And in pursuit of them sets out a crazed Safrax, determined to find his former lover before she gives birth to the child she carries within her. Meanwhile, Rome licks its wounds and tries to mend what remains of the Empire. Not only must it contend with the constant skirmishes between the various tribes, but a civil war between East and West is already looming, not far off. Tribune Stilicho will be a key figure, and by his side will always be his new escort: Goar, the Alan. But fate, capricious as ever, has not yet played its final hand.
