In the early centuries of Christianity, different ways of understanding Jesus' message coexisted. Alongside the Church that would eventually prevail, communities emerged that sought a direct spiritual experience, based on inner knowledge—gnosis—rather than on obedience to religious authority. The discovery of the Nag Hammadi manuscripts in Egypt in 1945 revealed fifty-two Coptic texts that had remained hidden for centuries. Among them were the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, and the Gospel of Mary, testimonies of a pluralistic and equitable Christianity, symbolic and profoundly mystical. In them, Jesus appears as a teacher who invites us to discover the light that dwells within each human being: "If you bring forth what is within you, that will save you." Centuries later, medieval Catharism revived the Gnosticism of the early Christian communities, only to be persecuted and virtually annihilated by the established religious power. From the Nag Hammadi manuscripts to the bonfires of Montsegur, this book traces a silenced tradition that still poses an essential question: what truths did the gnosis of Cathar Christianity seek to preserve that were condemned to oblivion?
