Only for Women collects 290 chronicles published primarily between 1959 and 1961, when Clarice Lispector returned to Rio de Janeiro after her divorce and began working as a newspaper writer. She had just spent eight years in Washington, D.C., where she witnessed the social conservatism of the 1950s and read extensively in women's magazines, influences that would later resonate in her own columns. But unlike her journalistic work for the Jornal do Brasil, Lispector did not sign these texts with her real name. Using the pseudonyms Tereza Quadros and Helen Palmer, or behind the mask of the famous Brazilian actress Ilka Soares, she addressed topics related to beauty, love, motherhood, and domestic life in these articles.
