Ottilie Rushforth hides from the powerful Mages' Guild as the secretary of a down-on-his-luck detective. She is a Linked, with threads of magic running beneath her skin, which is why the Guild wants to capture her and have her at their service. However, Ottilie plans to escape the Guild for good with her fiancé, the enigmatic poet, soldier, and smuggler Lewis Illing, with whom she maintains a long-distance relationship. All she has to do is find a mysterious relic, claim the reward, and leave the city forever. However, Ottilie's sisters, Pretoria, a shrewd sorceress and thief recently emerged from exile, and Madge, a Guild mage through and through, appear with equally unwelcome offers: a new life at the cost of everything Ottilie has ever wanted, or prestige and security within a gilded cage. With her life hanging by a thread, Ottilie must find the relic in a city divided by prejudice and ravaged by violence, and choose between the two sides of herself: the fugitive and the Linked.
