The First World War remains in the collective memory "the Great War"; everything related to it sparks widespread interest, and the number of books dedicated to its study increases year after year. This work by Sir Michael Howard—in the words of Max Hastings, "the best living military historian"—is undoubtedly the finest synthesis of its history published to date. Its author frames the conflict within the context of the political struggles of its time, but devotes the most attention to the battles themselves, since "once the war has begun, events on the battlefield determine what happens on the home front." Explaining these events, however, requires synthesizing a vast body of literature and confronting issues that are still controversial and debated. This is something only a master like Howard could accomplish, whose book, in the opinion of another great specialist, John Keegan, "is a model of what a great historian who is also a good writer can achieve."
