Although signs of anticipation of the modern short story can be found throughout literary history, it was in the 19th century that it achieved considerable growth in North America, due in part to the distinctive American lifestyle combined with the rise of newspapers and literary magazines. While Edgar Allan Poe is considered the father of the short story as we know it today, the authors included in this selection are precursors of the modern short story.
