George McWhirter Fotheringay, an ordinary man with no ambition or imagination, suddenly discovers that he can perform miracles simply by wishing them. However, instead of changing the world, he settles for small, insignificant prodigies... until one day, in a fit of rage, he literally sends a policeman to hell. Panicked, Fotheringay turns to Father Maydig, who is enthusiastic about this power. Together they set out to improve society, but their ineptitude ends up causing a catastrophe of biblical proportions (note the warning: the reader will die on page 61!). Alone in a world devastated by his own miracles, Fotheringay must then face the consequences of his incredible gift.
