When Jack Solomon, a struggling musician working in London's West End, is murdered, he awakens to a new reality where light and music are used to create magic, and where living eras of the past lie beneath modern London, forming layers upon layers that reach back to the depths of recorded history. Jack also discovers that many of those who inhabit London's past layers are furious with the present world, and that this anger is being harnessed by a society of light- and music-based sorcerers who can cross the boundary between life and death, between the present and the past. A past in which the dead are spreading revolution against the living, and in which all of history hangs in the balance.
