Many of these stories revolve around the fulfillment of a recurring destiny that often foreshadows a confrontation. Sometimes the protagonists are the men themselves, as in "The Other Duel" or "Guayaquil"; other times, they are their weapons: two knives that search for each other for a long time until they finally meet and fight. It can also happen, as in "The Story of Rosendo Juárez," that in this struggle one becomes a mirror of the other, one is both himself and his enemy. Or, as happens to Brodie, the other inspires both horror and fascination. Eleven stories in which the author says he has found his true voice: "My advanced age has taught me the resignation of being Borges."
