Outside of Myself proposes a journey through the lives of ten women, from very diverse geographical and historical backgrounds, to reflect on female mental health in relation to the social context, patriarchal oppression, violence, and creativity. It is not a treatise, nor a novel, nor an academic essay, but rather a possible narrative about how these women's condition has been judged by their environment and how this judgment has shaped their lives and the place they have occupied in the world. Natalie Wood, Sinéad O’Connor, Yayoi Kusama, Virginia Woolf, Agustina González, Carlota de México, Mary Todd Lincoln, Simone Weill, Cheslie Kryst, Conce... These are ten names, but there could have been many more. Violeta Gil and Ana Jarén, each from their respective disciplines, delve into the biography and personality of each of them and reveal a reality far more complex and disconcerting than we might imagine. From the perspective of the 21st century, through the human and deeply sensitive gaze of literature and art, this book helps us to know them better, to understand them and, through this exercise, to better understand the time in which we live.
