We are in Edo, the former Tokyo. Twenty years ago, the arrival of the Amanto from space prompted the enactment of the Disarmament Law. The resulting social changes marked the peak of the decline of the samurai, the former rulers of the country. In this era, however, there remains a somewhat eccentric man who believes in himself and still harbors the soul of a true samurai. His name is Gintoki Sakata, and he is the protagonist of this story: a sweets-loving, almost diabetic man who works as a handyman. After saving Shinpachi's sister from the clutches of debt collectors, the bespectacled boy begins working with him. Shortly after, Kagura appears almost out of nowhere and joins the group (or rather, forces her way in). Jiraiya, Tsukuyo's former master who was presumed dead, returns to Yoshiwara. When Gintoki sees how he has treated her to mold her into his perfect creation, rage consumes him, and he defeats Jiraiya. However, upon learning of her master's tragic past, Tsukuyo forgives him with mercy. Later, they discover Tsukuyo has a drinking problem, and then Gintoki and Hijikata endure a truly nightmarish experience at the dentist.
