Roger Ackroyd knew too much: he suspected that Mrs. Ferrars, with whom he was in love, had poisoned her first husband and that he was therefore being blackmailed. Suddenly, the tragic news of her death arrives, all indications pointing to an overdose of sleeping pills, and shortly afterward, Roger receives a letter with revealing contents, but before he can finish reading it, he is murdered from behind with a dagger.
