Benedict Newman is the most celebrated writer of his generation. When the police unexpectedly arrive at his home and question him about a series of crimes identical to those described in his latest book, he suffers a breakdown. Upon waking, Newman is a changed man: he speaks and acts like Colt Star, the detective from his novels, ready to investigate the case in which his creator is the prime suspect. Nash Elizondo never chose to have a father. Much less this one. But Benedict is her only living relative, and the law leaves her no choice but to accept her responsibility as his daughter. What Nash cannot imagine is that the fictional detective Newman believes himself to be will turn out to be the most insightful of those around her and the one closest to discovering who committed the murders and why, and that the truth will change everything.
