"Jerks Give Flowers" was Moderna de Pueblo's first big hit. When, 10 years after its publication, we decided to do a new edition, I reread it to see if any of the jokes had "aged badly." How naive! In my memory, the book was about the misadventures of a single woman in the city. And yes, it is about that, but it could also be titled "Modern Women Also Look for a Boyfriend (Desperately)." What struck me was seeing my need for male approval and realizing that the things I used to think were cool in guys now seem like blatant red flags. That's why, in this edition, I've added extra pages between each chapter to contrast how we see things now and understand the origin of that suffocating need to find a partner as if we were playing musical chairs. Modern women also have the right to mature, and today I assert that finding yourself is far more valuable than finding love.
