Denigrated by the most intransigent cinephiles, dubbing has been a crucial art in the transmission and popularity of cinema. One could say that all of cinema is dubbing, because it is all a "table of tricks, where everyone can find entertainment," as Cervantes proposed at the beginning of his Exemplary Novels. No dogma is intended here. Dubbing is not always good; neither is subtitling. Both have reasons for praise (and for criticism). The book's premise is quite simple: since any intervention in a film affects the original version in one way or another, the aim is to determine the least detrimental effect, so that the viewer receives, with the least possible impairment, the full range of emotions intended by its creators.
