In 1949, on the very day he received the sentence from the Norwegian court that tried him for alleged treason, Hamsun, an eighty-nine-year-old man who had gone from being his country's most beloved writer to its most hated, wrote the final sentence of the manuscript that would become his last book, "On Paths Hidden by Weeds": “San Juan, 1948. Today the Supreme Court has handed down its sentence, and I finish my writing.” He had begun writing in May 1945, the same day he and his wife were arrested. In this book, a blend of fiction and autobiography, Hamsun, initially confined to a nursing home and later to the psychiatric clinic to which he was transferred in an attempt to justify his past actions through insanity, describes his walks and childhood memories.
