By order of the Portuguese prince Henry the Navigator, in the 15th and 16th centuries Ferdinand Magellan, Vasco da Gama, and many other explorers sailed the seas in search of new ports and trade routes. Thus, the first global empire was born, through which a small country managed to dominate almost half the planet. Europe connected with the world, the first colonies were founded, and the first transatlantic empire was gradually created, leaving behind an ambivalent legacy whose often painful traces persist today.
