This fifth volume of The History of Middle-earth, edited by Christopher Tolkien, completes the presentation of the themes that had occupied J.R.R. Tolkien up to that point. He had already composed new versions of the Annals of Beleriand; The Silmarillion was almost finished and a new map had been drawn; the myth of the music of the Ainur had become an independent work, and the cardinal ideas of the Round World and the Straight Path in the vanished West appeared for the first time in the legends of the fall of Númenor. Christopher Tolkien also includes the abandoned tale of "a journey through time." The Lost Road, which would link the world of Númenor and Middle-earth with the legends of other regions and peoples, and a long essay (The Lhammas) that studies the complex relationships of the languages ​​and dialects of Middle-earth. The book closes with an "etymological dictionary" that records and explains a large number of Elvish words and names.
