On October 15, 1917, Federico García Lorca wrote the following inscription on a page titled "Mysticism in Which God Is Discussed": "Federico - the year I set out for the good of literature." Thus marked the official birth of a writer. Months earlier, his music teacher had died, extinguishing his aspirations as a composer and performer. Without sheet music and unable to travel to Paris, the young man from Fuente Vaqueros poured all his creativity onto the blank page. This volume, which brings together Lorca's complete literary prose: from his early writings to his mature lectures and most radical prose poems, stems from those first attempts. Here we find the adolescent Lorca who rebels against a vengeful God and dreams of a "divine socialist" Jesus, the traveling chronicler of "Impressions and Landscapes," the lecturer who championed flamenco and the power of reading, and the groundbreaking poet who, alongside Dalí, wrote such audacious pieces as "Suicide in Alexandria" and "Lovers Killed by a Partridge." In these pages, we find the young and committed Federico, the one who denounced injustices, showed compassion for the suffering, and criticized murderous patriotism and oppressive religiosity. Also emerging, between the lines, is the painful awareness of a different sexuality in a closed-off Granada. From the nostalgic recollection of his childhood in "My Village" to the exaltation of reading as salvation for the soul, this book traces the journey of a poet who never stopped writing prose, even though the world knew him primarily for his verse and plays. On the 110th anniversary of that youthful declaration, these pages celebrate Lorca the prose writer.
