Since the death of General Franco, many studies have been published on specific aspects of the Spanish Civil War, but no comprehensive synthesis that could replace the once-famous works that, given the considerable advances in historical research, are now outdated. The primary merit of Antony Beevor's book lies precisely in its foundation of rigorous research, incorporating the most recent findings from investigations conducted in Spain and abroad over the past few decades. Furthermore, it draws on previously unknown information from Soviet and German archives, such as that found in Colonel von Richthofen's private war diary.
