Sybil has spent nine years wishing she had no more dreams. She is a clairvoyant, like the other abandoned girls who pledged to serve for a decade of their lives in exchange for a home in the grand cathedral. Six supernatural figures known as the Portents infuse her with visions while she sleeps, enabling her to foresee terrible misfortunes before they occur. Both the powerful and the common folk traverse the windswept wastelands of the kingdom of Traum so that Sybil can reveal what the future holds. Just as her time as a clairvoyant is about to end, a mysterious knight arrives at the cathedral. Rude, blasphemous, and devilishly attractive, Rodrick shows no respect for visions. But when Sybil's companions begin to disappear one by one, the young woman will need his help to find them. Only the gods have the answers she seeks, and though she would prefer to avoid Rodrick's dark eyes and sharp tongue, only a heretic can defeat a god.
