One morning in April 2017, during an expedition to the Sibylline Mountains —one of the areas of the Apennines most affected by the devastating earthquake of the previous year— the writer and journalist Paolo Rumiz stumbled upon a statue of Benedict of Nursia amidst the ruins, pointing to a spot between heaven and earth. As if in an epiphany, the statue revealed a dazzling truth: the key to Europe's reconstruction lay in applying the example of the saint who saved the continent after the fall of the Roman Empire. Indeed, the seeds of the Renaissance had been sown in the heart of the Apennines, from where the spirit of the order that invigorated the roots of Western culture spread. With the effectiveness of a single formula, ora et labora (pray and work), Benedictine monasticism had managed to save a West plagued by violence, invasions, wars, and urban decay. Benedict's disciples had managed to build, with the monasteries, formidable bastions of resistance against dissolution. Hoping to find the coordinates that will help us navigate today's apocalyptic present, Paolo Rumiz embarks on a spiritual journey, from the Atlantic to the banks of the Danube, in search of the wisdom held within some of these monasteries. At a time when the sowers of discord are trying to tear our world to pieces, these black cassocks tell us that Europe is, above all, an ancient space of migrations; a blessed land that it would be foolish to fortify.
