Within the monumental literary legacy of Federico García Lorca (1898-1936), the same legacy that established him as an exceptional prose writer and elevated him to one of the most important poets of the 20th century, it is perhaps in his work as a playwright that he most fully realized his tragic vision of the world. His is a stark and poetic theater, both traditional and modern. Marked equally by the elegance of modernist theater and the harshness of neopopularism, Lorca's dramatic work ranges from the farces and comedies of his youth, such as Mariana Pineda (1927) and La zapatera prodigiosa (1927), to the tragedies and dramas of his maturity, such as Bodas de sangre (1933), Yerma (1934), and La casa de Bernarda Alba (1936). All of them fundamental works in the history of Spanish literature and signed by an author according to whom: "Theater is poetry that rises from the book and becomes human." The present volume collects all of Lorca's theatrical production as well as unfinished texts, appendices, alternative versions and songs.
