Adapted by Hollywood into a romantic melodrama, "Gone with the Wind," winner of the 1937 Pulitzer Prize, tells more than just the tumultuous love story between a young and capricious Southern belle, Scarlett O'Hara, and a handsome and eccentric bootlegger somewhat older than her, Rhett Butler. The novel goes much further, ruthlessly portraying the aristocratic slave-owning society of the powerful Southern gentlemen, who refuse to relinquish their privileges. Their dependence on slaves to make cotton plantations profitable leads them to reject the social and economic reforms championed by President Lincoln, sparking the Civil War that divided the United States of America, the consequences of which are still felt today.
