Christmas Eve, 1901. Gabriel Ward, one of London's most prestigious lawyers, is working on a delicate defamation case when a macabre package shatters the tranquility of the Inner Temple, the legendary heart of the British courts: someone has mailed a mummified hand. Although the recipient, Temple Treasurer Sir William Waring, is understandably shocked, Gabriel is intrigued. Who would want to send something like that? And why? But when more packages arrive and the first victim dies, Gabriel realizes that the target isn't Sir William, but the Temple itself.
