When Diana Bishop, descendant of a powerful line of witches, discovered an important alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, she unleashed a war that bound her life to that of the ancient vampire Matthew Clairmont. Now, the coexistence of witches, demons, vampires, and humans is in grave danger. To stay safe, Diana and Matthew travel back in time to London in 1590. They soon discover, however, that the past is not safe either. Reclaiming his former identity as a poet and spy for Queen Elizabeth, the vampire rejoins a group of radicals known as the School of Night. Many of its members are rebellious demons, the creative minds of the era, including the playwright Christopher Marlowe and the mathematician Thomas Harriot. Together, Matthew and Diana explore Tudor London in search of the elusive Ashmole 782 and a witch who can teach Diana to control her extraordinary powers.
