Sentenced to death for tuberculosis, Colonel Francisco Querol, recently returned from the Cuban War, is tasked by Nicolás Salmerón, President of the Republic, with ridding Castellón of the Carlist threat. The night before his duel over a matter of honor, Querol dedicates his last strength to preparing a report on his actions. During this process, he recounts his participation in the 1868 revolution, the assassination of Prim, the reign of Amadeo I, and how he was informed of the advent of the First Republic, as well as the circumstances that led Cubans, Carlists, and Cantonalists to clash with the central government in a three-way civil war.
