In Daretana's grandest mansion, a high-ranking Imperial official has died (and all signs point to murder) after a tree sprouted from his body. Even in a place like this, on the Empire's borders, where contagion is rampant and the blood of leviathans triggers strange magical transformations, this is a terrifying and impossible death. To lead the investigation, they've assigned Ana Dolabra, a detective whose brilliance and reputation are matched only by her eccentricity. Rumor has it she wears a blindfold at all times and is capable of solving seemingly impossible cases without ever leaving her house. She is accompanied by her new assistant, Dinios Col, magically altered in ways that make him the perfect complement to Ana's intellect. Din is often shocked, perplexed, and sometimes even rages at his new superior, but as the case unfolds and he watches Ana's mind leap from one startling deduction to the next, he is forced to admit that she is, without a doubt, the best detective in the Empire. The two begin to see clues that point to a mastermind behind it all, someone who has hatched a plan that could endanger the Empire itself. Din has barely begun to piece together the puzzle that is Ana Dolabra, and he already wonders how long he will be able to keep his own secrets safe from her sharp mind.
