Considered the father of Russian realism and simultaneously the most brilliant precursor of modern absurdism, Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) shattered the literary conventions of the 19th century. His work is the fundamental bridge that later paved the way for authors such as Dostoevsky, Bulgakov, and Kafka himself.
